We hosted our 3rd SENCO Briefing and Development Event at Bolton Arena on Friday 31st January.

It was a great event with some in depth discussion about how we can improve attendance in school and the importance of building relationships with pupils and parents to build a trust and convey the importance of attendance at school, both for now and in the future. Absence from school is understandably associated with poor academic performance, but it also linked to long term physical and mental illnesses as well as an increased risk of financial difficulties and involvement in crime.
Our goal is to stress the importance of attendance to parents for their children's wellbeing and their future. Not just through financial penalties.
We moved on to a short training session discussing the merits of Emotion Coaching and how it can help build relationships with pupils, it can help them to feel safe and feel able to build relationships again after potential previous trauma by using emotional regulation and empathetic co-regulation.
We advocate for the use of Emotion Coaching alongside The PACE Approach to support all pupils, after all over 60% of all adults are though to have had at least one ACE (Adverse Childhood Experience) during their childhood. You are almost guaranteed to have multiple pupils in you class that have experienced at least 1 ACE so why not approach them all with these methods and support your pupils to feel safe, it will almost certainly lead to better academic performance too.
